May 28, 2016 - Taylor Swift, plus Memorial Day weekend bonus throwbacks

So, let's try to kick off this blog with one of the most common celebration times known out there: Memorial Day weekend. Hope everyone had a nice time, this countdown...was decent, but definitely left something to be desired. Good things happened, but some of the songs have started to stale on me. And yet, let's see if I can get the hang of this journaling aspect. With that being said, here are the songs that are leaving us this week.

New Entrants
- Our first new entry comes from Timeflies, with Once in a While. I like the xylophone parts of the song, and there are other aspects that I like too. So it definitely works for me, although we'll see if it sticks with me.

- The other entry is from none other than Calvin Harris and Rihanna, known as This Is What You Came For. I listened to this one a lot when it was new, and while Rihanna's lyrics admittedly aren't stand-out and the auto-tuned "You, oh"s in the chorus get repetitive, I still enjoy it a lot for now. I don't think it'll be quite the monster hit that We Found Love was in 2011/12, but it's definitely a nice summer song. However, I'm sure I'll get sick of this one eventually.

This Is What You Blurbed For
- On the note of our exits, Something In The Way You Move by Ellie Goulding did okay, but it was a little sad to see its tenure weaker than it was. But I never cared that much for Out Of the Woods by Taylor Swift, so I have no complaints seeing it gone.

- I don't know about you, but I am so ready for Work by Rihanna featuring Drake to leave already. Seriously, I still can hardly remember any lines from that song that aren't from the chorus, and it hasn't gotten better at all.

-Nice to see Make Me Like You by Gwen Stefani stick around a little longer. Given its weak performance on the Hot 100 and how Hits 1 hasn't been kind to Gwen Stefani in the past, it wasn't destined to do good here. Still not bad that it hasn't left yet.

-Although many of these bloggers have gotten sick of Perfect by One Direction and In the Night by The Weeknd (especially the former, given it's the longest tenured song on the countdown), I'm just not tired of either one. I still really like them both, even if I see why they've been worn on.

-It bothers me that Sirius XM Hits 1 usually cuts rap verses out of songs, which is really disappointing for You Don't Own Me by Grace. Without G-Eazy in the song, it's way too short. #GetSiriusXMToStopCuttingRapVerses

-I am also quite glad to see Never Forget You by Zara Larsson and MNEK take a small jump. It's one of my favorite songs on the Hot 100's Top 20 currently, so it'd be great to see it hit the Top 10 eventually.

-Am I the only one who doesn't like Just Like Fire by P!nk, however? I've seen it in purple on several blogs, but it isn't doing it for me. Her vocals sound unappealing here and for a soundtrack hit, it isn't one that I feel has much to do with the movie. But because the Alice: Through the Looking Glass film released this weekend, I have a feeling it's going to jump next week.

-Ride by Twenty-one Pilots took a nice jump 12 spots. No complaints there.

-But the jump that I'm happiest about is I Took a Pill in Ibiza by Mike Posner making the Top 10. That drop in the chorus sounds really cool, and it does a nice job at chronicling his sad life.

-Pillowtalk by Zayn Malik was cool for a little while, but now it isn't quite as sexy. I'm ready for it to drop.

-I also have no problem at all with Can't Stop the Feeling! by Justin Timberlake taking the #2 spot. It's bound to take that #1 very soon, just wait. And I'm very excited for that, but I know that before long it'll be turning blue, yellow, red or even orange on a few blogs.

-And finally, our #1 pick. Just...why? A new #1 is nice, and Taylor Swift is a big name, but this isn't a song that screamed #1 material. Not only did it flop on the Hot 100, but it came so suddenly and doesn't quite fit. This was one of my jams for a while, but it's starting to lose its appeal and it's not quite as catchy or fun.

For Memorial Day, they also did some callbacks to previous hits that had been on the countdown years ago. Here were the songs they threw out there.

Memorial Day Edition Bonus Songs
She Looks So Perfect by 5 Seconds of Summer
Radioactive by Imagine Dragons
Fancy by Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX
Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen
Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO
Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon
What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction
We Are Young by fun. featuring Janelle Monae
Love Somebody by Maroon 5
Bad Blood by Taylor Swift
Clarity by Zedd featuring Foxes
Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell Williams and T.I.
E.T. by Katy Perry
Cool for the Summer by Demi Lovato
Rude by Magic!

-Of all these songs, Clarity by Zedd featuring Foxes is the one that has held up the best to me. As stupid as Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO and Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen are, they still have appeal to me, and I can still definitely respect Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon even if it's soured on many. But Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell Williams and T.I. has not grown on me at all.

So that's my first jab at this thing. Hope I made this in a readable manner, but it's fun to give my opinions on this stuff. I'd like to know if there's anything I can improve on, or any opinions you may (dis)agree with here. Anyway, thanks for reading!

Welcome!

Hey, everybody! I enjoy following the trends of pop music, and I have read multiple blogs that talk about one of the well-known thresholds of music that gets shared out there today, the Sirius XM Hits 1 Weekend Countdown that plays every Saturday and Sunday. In it, Spyder Harrison takes the 45 most Whatchuwanted voted for songs and plays them back to back. Most of the songs on it tend to be songs that are hits, such as on the Billboard Hot 100, but there are always a handful of songs you'll see there that never get their chance to appear there. As I said, I've seen multiple blogs that recap this countdown, and since I like this trend, I figured, hey, may as well get into it too. I also might post other stuff, such as Billboard related subjects, or occasional reviews of certain songs. But the main thing this is for is the countdown. Here's the formatting order I'll be using:

1. Prelude
2. Leaving songs
3. The countdown
4. Entrant reviews
5. Blurbs
6. Hit-Bound*
7. My Top 5 Picks

* Hit-Bound won't appear on every entry, and I don't do the Hits and Misses or YouTube15 because I don't get that extensive. But I will try to talk about the countdown as much as I can.

And when I review the countdown, I use a color code to illustrate what I think of the songs. So, just as a reference, here is the color code. I'll be using the same standard one by most other bloggers in this vein.
Purple = My favorite song on the countdown
Green = Love the song and thoroughly welcome its presence
Blue = Like the song, don't love it but I don't mind it either
Pink = Song is close to getting old, some of its appeal may remain but not as much
Yellow = Song is old and has basically lost its appeal
Turquoise = Song is really old and needs to leave or I'll hate it
Red = Hate the song and do not want it around
Orange = My least favorite song on the countdown
Dark green = No real opinion on the song

So I'll try to do what I can when it comes to this blog and keep it updated. That being said, I'm not the best at being consistent, but I'll try to make it fun. Thanks for reading!
