Alright, everyone, this is it. Hits 1's 45 biggest songs of the entire year of 2016. If you don't know, these are the top 45 songs that had the most spins the entire year, based on the votes. There was plenty of quality stuff that made it here, and some that wasn't exactly ideal. Not really much more to it than that. So let's get into Hits 1's Top 45 Songs of 2016!
And of course, I'm not going to be ranking the songs based on if I think they're "old" or not. For the end of the year I rank them with my final thoughts on them using a six-point scale. I assume you know the color code by now, but in case you don't:
Red = Shit
Orange = Least favorite song
Turquoise = Bad
Yellow = Meh
Pink = Decent
Blue = Good
Green = Great
Purple = Favorite song
And for fun, here was last year's countdown. I know this isn't necessary (especially since I covered all these songs on my 2015 Year-End Hot 100 post), but it's a nice way to look back. It's also a good way to compare what we had then to what we ended with now. So, here you go!

...Wow. Only one song in the bottom tier, and only six others I would genuinely consider bad on their own. And almost half of these songs I have no problem at all returning to even now. Out of 45, that is very impressive. There are a few I may have slightly overrated back in July but they're still plenty fun for me.
Now let's see how well 2016's Year-End countdown can hold up to it! Enjoy.

Merry Blurbmas!
- There are a few songs such as On My Mind by Ellie Goulding, Close by Nick Jonas and Tove Lo, Me Too by Meghan Trainor - and mercifully so, We Don't Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez, and Cold Water by Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber and MØ that I'm surprised didn't make this list.
- Of all the songs to repeat from 2015, I did not think that Stitches by Shawn Mendes would make it at the tail-end. Drag Me Down by One Direction was no surprise, though.
- I had a feeling that both Into You by Ariana Grande and Hymn For The Weekend by Coldplay would claw their way onto this lineup despite debuting in August. But I'm definitely glad they did. If it weren't for the latter's very impressive stay in the Top 20 and debuting there, it probably wouldn't have made it.
- To think that the #1 song on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 was only #39 here. Not to mention its predecessor, the #2 song on that chart, was at the exact midway point here. Just shows how they don't let certain hits blow up to them as many other stations do.
- Taylor Swift had two songs that Hits 1 was super nice to, but flopped elsewhere, in the #37 and #11 spots. Just goes to show that anything by her is massive to Hits 1.
- I'm glad that In The Night by The Weeknd made it. That one I just can't get sick of.
- Both 7 Years by Lukas Graham and Work From Home by Fifth Harmony made it midway through, following the common tradition of the big but not quite enormous hits (i.e. 11-20 range on Billboard's list) being relatively low here.
- Fall Out Boy's final bow of their long streak, Irresistible, made it in at the Top 20. No surprise there.
- One Call Away by Charlie Puth and Closer by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey both ranked way lower than I thought they would. The former I'm not complaining about, though.
- Pillowtalk by Zayn Malik and Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes both ranked way higher than I thought they would.
- I was absolutely shocked that Hello by Adele failed to make the Top 10. With how much it hogged the #1 spot you'd think it would've been there for sure. Then again it did burn through a chunk of its airplay in 2015. If it weren't for that, it would've easily been Top 5.
- Of course Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya made the Top 10. I'm gonna be honest, when I was listening to this countdown, I forgot that song even existed. Thanks for bringing back the bad memories.
- I did not think that Perfect by One Direction would be quite as high as it was. I thought it'd be in the 8 - 12 range or so. Nevertheless, I'm definitely happy that it reached this point, and after it was the bane of this countdown community back in the spring it seems like many have grown back into it, which is good.
- With Can't Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake being the monster that it was, I knew it'd be high. But I honestly expected Ride to pass it, no joke. Either way, I'm definitely content with how those two turned out...
- ...And then we come to our #1. I'm still mad that this song failed to last a year, but I'm definitely glad it was this successful. While it doesn't stand up to some of the past #1s that we've had, it earned its success and I came to appreciate it quite a bit. This band dominated the year and deserved that #1 spot. Also, fun fact: this is the fourth year in a row where Hits 1's #1 song is a rock song.
Overall, I'm content with this lineup. If I haven't said, my standards aren't usually too high, so it takes a lot for me to put a song in the bottom tier in the final say. Last year's lineup was definitely better for me, but I don't think this year was QUITE as bad as people say it was.
My Bottom 5 Of These Picks
1. No by Meghan Trainor
2. Work From Home by Fifth Harmony
3. Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya

My Top 5 Of These Picks

2. Into You by Ariana Grande
3. Heathens by Twenty-one Pilots
4. Confident by Demi Lovato
5. Hello by Adele
(HM: In The Night by The Weeknd) - Only mentioning this because some may consider Hello more 2015 than 2016.
And there you have it! I promise I will try to have the A Year In Review page out as soon as I can. And I'm sure there'll be today's countdown as well. Thanks for reading!
Remember that OOTW had two countdown runs.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but I didn't mention its one week in 2014 because that didn't count towards this year.
DeleteNice post, Scott!
ReplyDeleteYes! CBTO at #2!
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly is so bad about Sit Still, Look Pretty?
ReplyDeleteFor one, it contradicts everything that was said in Hide Away, which was about how she wants a good guy who will be nice to her...and this song throws that out the window. This is better, but that's not saying much, and that's before we get into how obnoxiously overplayed it was on Hits 1 for a song that never even cracked the Top 20 on the Hot 100.
DeleteHow is Cheap Thrills in pink and not yellow? HMMM>>>>>
