2016: A Year In Review

*Note: Please read this post before you continue reading ahead. It adds on to some of the things that I state here. Thank you.*

Well guys, 2016 is at its end. I started this blog one day when I was on vacation because I had found myself with so little to occupy my time. Then I started to pay attention to this countdown more, and actually listen to it as it went on. And what did I think of this year as a whole?

Well... To say the least, it did not live up to the expectations I had hoped for. Coming off of the wonderful year that was 2015, I found 2016 overall an incredibly underwhelming year for pop music, both on the Weekend Countdown and the Hot 100. A lot of the songs that blew up weren’t up to standards. I
t didn’t help that there were times that the countdown had long periods of inertia, and we were constantly getting one-exit weeks in the second half of the year, along with drops and jumps that would average around 15 spots or so, as opposed to previous years that had lots of 20+ spot drops and jumps out of nowhere and an average week would have at least three exits.
Not only that, but while unrelated to this, we even had the deaths of several major names in music, most notably David Bowie and Prince. There was also some major feuds including the Taylor Swift vs Kanye West and Kim Kardashian battle, and Ke$ha's lawsuit against Dr. Luke. It wasn't long before people were calling this the saddest year in music history, and you can bet that this is a year many want to forget.

But you know what? It is what it is. I'll talk more about the unfortunate matters later, but for now, let's focus on what's important here. Anyway, we had quite a few songs that achieved the #1 spot on the countdown this year, some of which completely hogged it. You guys already know the color code for these at this point, so let's have a look at them, shall we? (These are sorted in the order of when they first hit #1.)

Hello by Adele (12 weeks, 5 in 2015*) (Tied for all-time record)

Confident by Demi Lovato (1 week)
Perfect by One Direction (2 weeks)
Stressed Out by Twenty-one Pilots (5 weeks)
One Call Away by Charlie Puth (2 weeks)
My House by Flo Rida (1 week)
Cake By The Ocean by DNCE (4 weeks)
Victorious by Panic! At The Disco (1 week)
New Romantics by Taylor Swift (2 weeks)
Can't Stop the Feeling! by Justin Timberlake (10 weeks)
I Took a Pill In Ibiza by Mike Posner (2 weeks)

Send My Love (To Your New Lover) by Adele (1 week)
Don't Let Me Down by The Chainsmokers featuring Daya (3 weeks)
Closer by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey (8 weeks)
Heathens by Twenty-one Pilots (1 week)
Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes (2 weeks)
* Although Hello had 7 weeks at #1 in 2015, the last two will count towards the coming final Top 45, so I am saying that 5 of them counted in 2015.

Congrats to those acts for taking the top. As always, we have songs that we tend to like for a while, but die on us thanks to radio overplay. I'm sure I've said before, but that rarely bothers me as much as it does many others. More often than not, I don't let overplay be my whole reason for hating otherwise excellent songs. On the other hand, there were songs that I hated from day one to the end, or thought they were mediocre at start and quickly got worse. It was not pleasant hearing them.
There were a handful of songs I could have gone with for this, but these were some that came to mind right away. These are just countdown related, and not outside of such because if I were to do that, I'd be here for a while. And here they are:

Bottom 10 Countdown Songs of 2016

10. This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris with Rihanna
We start this list off with a song that I actually liked when it first dropped and I felt like people were being too hard on it. But after a while (read: overplay), I realized there is so little to this song worth caring about. The "you-ou-ou"s get so annoying and it sounds like they're trying to cut her off most of the time. And there's the beat which comes off as more of the tropical house that we've been getting all year. Now, Calvin Harris has made a handful of songs I like, but in the bigger picture, this is not one of them.

9. That's My Girl by Fifth Harmony

As if those fart-sounding trumpets in the verses weren't grating enough, the title-only chorus does not sound good with those pitch shifted layers over the girls' voices. The lyrics are nothing worth talking about either. Now, it's not that I have anything against self-empowerment anthems - I can respect what they want to do, but quite a few of them just sound terrible, or usually recycled and don't do much to really be powerful. Case in point...

8. Rise by Katy Perry

Oh, I am definitely gonna piss people off with this one... But I was definitely too kind to this song by never putting it in my Bottom 5 during its time on the countdown, because listening to it again it's even worse than I thought. The verses feel like an intro with zero momentum, it gets worse when the vocal layering comes in afterwards, and the chorus is extremely grating between the synths, brittle trap snares and Katy stretching out her lines. And need I remind you that Katy Perry sold out to the friggin' Olympics and barely even charted? This one only got worse and worse every time I heard it. And yes, she has made songs I like and I do want to see more from her, but she really needs to cut it out with these recycled self-esteem anthems and go back to the fun tastelessness of her first two albums. And the public seems to agree on that, because not only did this flop on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting just outside of the Top 10 and then sinking, but it lasted a very short three weeks here on the countdown. And mercifully so, which is the only reason it isn't higher up here. More on that in a bit, but good riddance.

7. Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes

Most critics have already ripped into this one, and yeah, to say the least there is no defending this from how not subtle its nature is. I liked it at first until I seriously paid attention to others' takes on it. I wanted to like it in the long run, but couldn't. As many have said, this is not the nature of song that works best for wanting to take a girl from her boyfriend, as he doesn't give any reason why he thinks having him is best for her as opposed to her current one. The guitar is okay, and that stupid line at the end of the chorus has been mocked by more people than one. Yeah, there's no way to defend this song at this point.

6. Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya

While this song is better than Hide Away, which I considered putting here because it was on 2016's Year-End Hot 100, I decided to not include it because it was on 2015's final Top 45, and even then this being better isn't saying much. To start, its predecessor talks about how Daya is longing for a nice person who will appreciate her...and then this song comes along and throws all of that out the window, saying how she doesn't want a guy because she thinks they're out for her to "take control", or what have you. While the production here is better, the song was never exciting to me, and when I take into account how obnoxiously overplayed on Hits 1 it was for a song that never even cracked the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, there is no way for me to condone this. Next!

5. Work From Home by Fifth Harmony
The beat here is just boring, and the lyrics are a bunch of innuendos about things like trying to get this guy fired and him "being the boss" at home and how he should basically just quit his job. Not to mention I can hear the sound of a sad puppy in the second verse. That puppy feels just as sad to be in the song as we are to hear it. With Camilla Cabello being no more from the group, hopefully they'll be in for better things in the future. And I did say "hopefully".

4. Work by Rihanna featuring Drake

This song is a mess. The chorus is just gibberish, and so are the verses, Drake does little for the song and they even outright admitted that the song was not finished. I mean, it's not as bad as Birthday Cake from 2012, which is EASILY the worst thing she's ever been a part of, but this is still pretty lousy. And while several have considered the above song worse, I find this worse because at least Work From Home I could remember how it goes.

3. Gold by Kiiara

The verses expect us to buy this Kiiara chick as some gangster who leaves "bodies on the pavement" and leaves the roof on fire and abandons some guy "without ever letting him know". And of course that's before we get to the choppy sampled chorus which is just asinine. Who would have thought that a YouTube Poop of a song would've caught on?

2. No by Meghan Trainor

Now this may be a bit high for a song like this, especially for one I actually kinda liked at first, until I realized how stupid it really was. A failed attempt at late 90's/early 2000's do-wop, and it's not the message of the song that annoys me so much as it is Meghan's lack of style and charisma, and more importantly, this just doesn't fit her, at least what she had on her first album. And the overplay didn't help at all. But even at that...

1. Me Too by Meghan Trainor

It should be no surprise that this is my utmost bottom pick. In fact, I can safely say that this is one of the worst songs I have ever heard. In short, it's Meghan Meghans being narcissistic and telling you, the listener, that you are worse than her, over a stupid beat that at times sounds like distorted burping. Lines like "So bless me baby, achoo" just make me hang my head in shame. The song sounds like something that will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas would make and then give to someone else, in fact it basically rips off of will.i.am if I do say so myself. Almost every music critic I've seen on YouTube or blogs have ripped this song apart and I really don't think I need to say anything more about it.

And with that, now for a few songs that aren't in my Bottom 10, but do deserve a few words from me.

S.O.B. by Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats - One of the most infamous songs in this countdown community, and when I first heard it, my reaction to it wasn't the most positive. I thought, "Are we sure this song isn't from the 50's or something?" But as someone who does know a lot of old music, it's not a song I can really show disdain towards. It's admittedly kinda funny, nothing spectacular but it's comedic.

Kill 'Em With Kindness by Selena Gomez - Now, initially I had this one REALLY high on my bottom 5 during its time here. Listening to it again, it doesn't really enrage me as much as I thought it did. I mean, it's still pretty repetitive and I still don't like it at all, but it honestly doesn't elicit much of a response from me at all anymore.

Dessert by Dawin - I'll say it, this is one of my guilty pleasures of the year. Yes, I'm not going to deny that that chipmunk voice is silly, but aside from that the song does try to pass itself off as a nice love song, and the verses are alright in that regard, at least to me.

We Don't Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez - While I know that this is a very infamous song between both YouTubers and certain bloggers, I can appreciate what it wants to be, even if it's a sad song without much to it. I guess it's because of the production. I didn't like it at first, but it kinda grew on me, and while I don't think it's still great per se, I think it's at least passable.

Starving by Hailee Steinfeld and Grey featuring Zedd - I juggled between whether to mention this song this year or save it for next year, but I decided to deal with it now. Anyway, yeah, the lyrics are clunky and really don't make any sense, the guitar feels like it's just there, and then of course the drop, which just feels like distorted sounds. You may have seen that this was my least favorite song on the countdown the two weeks so far that it's been #1, but it barely missed the list. Consider this my dishonorary #11. The other songs in this mold are ones I kinda just wanted to discuss for their infamy.

Now for some other mentions. To start, we have five songs that were all cut pretty short before their time to shine could really come. Two of these songs are fun ones that I think deserved better, one I didn't care about, one I kinda just ranted about, and the last one I didn't care for but admittedly took a brutal exit after what looked to be a promising start (I say the word "promising" because I know that some liked it). Here they are:

Most Hysterically Short Tenured Song Of 2016: Tie between:

Hold Me Up by Conrad Sewell (debuted 1/23, departed 2/13)
El Taxi by Pitbull featuring Osmani Garcia and Lil Jon (debuted 3/5, departed 3/26)
Sound of Your Heart by Shawn Hook (debuted 4/2, departed 4/23)
Rise by Katy Perry (debuted 9/3, departed 9/24)
The Little Things by Big Gigantic featuring Angela McCluskey (debuted 10/1, departed 10/22)

Also, fun fact: not only did all of these songs except Hold Me Up departed while they were in the 20s, but they debuted and departed in the same month.

Then we come to the biggest stand-out of the year. The one. The one that lasted the longest here. It was just cut short, and I'm still mad that it failed to last a year on the countdown. It debuted the week that last year's longest tenured song lasted a year on the countdown. With that, here it is:

Longest Tenured Song Of 2016: Stressed Out by Twenty-one Pilots (debuted 12/26/15, departed 12/17/16)

Then we had a handful of songs on Hit-Bound that never made their way to the countdown. Some of them deserved so much better, and here I am going to pick the one that I think got the hardest shaft. And I'm not going to mention songs that are still on Hit-Bound right now. But with that being said...

2016 Lights Over Paris Hit-Bound Hero Award: Back 2 U by Steve Aoki and Boehm featuring Walk The Moon
Honorable mention: This Girl by Kungs vs Cookin' On 3 Burners

Finally, we come to the song that, while it was huge most elsewhere around the world, never made its way onto the countdown. A very infamous song among this countdown community, and for good reason. It actually appeared on the YouTube15, but not the countdown. Not too much to say about it at this point, unless you're into Vine songs or the like and are sad that Vine is no more. But here it is:

Biggest Countdown Whiff of 2016: Panda by Desiigner
Honorable mention: Needed Me by Rihanna

And I think that's everything I had to cover! Sorry if this post seemed rushed, but it had to be out before the year. I might refine it a bit at a later time, but it's not a high priority. Hopefully I can get my top countdown songs of the year and the Year-End Hot 100 post out soon. All this being said, thanks for reading!

December 24, 2016 - Hailee Steinfeld + Grey + Zedd (2)

Hey guys, I am so sorry that my A Year In Review page still isn't out, I've been super busy but plan to get it out before the end of the year. But we'll see. But onto this round. That's right, double duty today, on Christmas Eve no less. But I did post my final thoughts on Hits 1's final Top 45 of the year a few hours ago, so check that out. And I have a lot to take care of, so don't be surprised if this seems brief. To make it quick, we have quality going around... Except some of it isn't the place that it should be, at least to me. There are no songs leaving us this week, which isn't surprising at the very end of the year, so let’s go.

Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week: Let Me Love You by DJ Snake with Justin Bieber (-21)

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Tie between Just Hold On by Steve Aoki featuring Louis Tomlinson and I Don't Wanna Live Forever by Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift (+9)

Happy Blurb-idays!

- Ouch. While Let Me Love You I have been getting tired of, I didn't think this big a drop was coming.

- Before introducing Setting The World On Fire, Spyder said something about how she posted a mostly naked picture of herself with her daughter Willow holding her baby bump saying "the snuggle is real". Snuggle = struggle? Get it? Kinda funny.

- Before introducing Send My Love (To Your New Lover), Spyder went through a long list of acts who were on Carpool Karaoke with James Corden. I didn't mention this last week, but I watched the one with Bruno Mars and that was epic fun. I should learn more about this show.

- I figured that Just Hold On by Steve Aoki featuring Louis Tomlinson would jump from its debut last week. The small jump is no surprise for this time of year.

- Before introducing Love Me Now, Spyder talked about how John Legend was recognized for his contribution to the new movie La La Land, which many are saying could win Best Picture at the Oscars. I really want to see that movie. It looks fun!

- Before introducing That's My Girl, Spyder briefly talked about how Camilla Cabello has finally left Fifth Harmony. I know that many are rejoicing, but I feel like people exaggerate how bad she supposedly is. Kinda funny that I say that despite hating this song for different reasons.

- There was also I Don't Wanna Live Forever by Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift, which I thought would jump more than it did, because I heard it several times throughout the week. But again, this is a slow time.

- Before introducing Kids, Spyder mentioned how Ryan Tedder considers All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey to be hands down the best Christmas song of the past ten years. The song technically released in the 90's, but it's definitely a classic.

- There were a few songs that, as a substitution for guest DJ spots, had people saying hello and happy holiday greetings, but then Spyder would introduce the songs.

- The entire seventh and final set of five held their positions from last week (thank you, holiday weekend). On that note, as you can see, I have kinda grown into All Time Low by Jon Bellion. This might last, it might not. Meanwhile, Play That Song by Train is just doing nothing right now and I can guarantee that it'll be red very soon.

- Sure, Adrian, you think I care that your least favorite song on the countdown is my favorite? By all means, put 24K Magic by Bruno Mars in orange for as long as you want. You're not gonna make me like it any less! ;D

- Very nice to see In The Name Of Love by Martin Garrix and Bebe Rexha continue its upward progression. I know that its odds at #1 are super unlikely, but I'd be pleased if it makes the Top 5.

- I'm not surprised about our #1 holding there, but I'm still not happy about it. The only good thing about it is that I get to search for a nice picture of Hailee Steinfeld and her duo, which is a plus. Bleh, though.

As for Hit-Bound, long story short, Love Like We Used To by Captain Cuts re-entered, and we've got one new entrant - Hallelujah by Pentatonix, a cover of the same song by Leonard Cohen, who died just weeks after its release.

Favorite Countdown Song From This Week One Year Ago: Something Better by Audien featuring Lady Antebellum - Yes, this is a new addition that I'm adding that many are using. And even if I wasn't as avid a countdown follower a year ago I still remember the songs from then.

#1 Recommendation For Hits 1 And The Countdown: Diggy by Spencer Ludwig - I hear this song on Venus a lot and it's one I'd like to see here.

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:

Stressed Out by Twenty-one Pilots — I basically said everything I needed to the past couple months and the year-end page.
One Call Away by Charlie Puth — Sorry Charlie, but you really are no Superman. Is that phone of yours out of date?
Fun fact: both these songs were #1s. Sorry if I said like nothing for them, but I'll have words for them very soon when I do my Year-End Hot 100 piece.

Stay tuned for my A Year In Review page, and my top songs of the year and the Year-End Hot 100 piece too. I'll get those once I finally stop being lazy. Thanks for reading, everybody!

Twenty-one Pilots - Hits 1's Final Top 45 of 2016

Alright, everyone, this is it. Hits 1's 45 biggest songs of the entire year of 2016. If you don't know, these are the top 45 songs that had the most spins the entire year, based on the votes. There was plenty of quality stuff that made it here, and some that wasn't exactly ideal. Not really much more to it than that. So let's get into Hits 1's Top 45 Songs of 2016!

And of course, I'm not going to be ranking the songs based on if I think they're "old" or not. For the end of the year I rank them with my final thoughts on them using a six-point scale. I assume you know the color code by now, but in case you don't:

Red = Shit
Orange = Least favorite song
Turquoise = Bad
Yellow = Meh
Pink = Decent
Blue = Good
Green = Great
Purple = Favorite song

And for fun, here was last year's countdown. I know this isn't necessary (especially since I covered all these songs on my 2015 Year-End Hot 100 post), but it's a nice way to look back. It's also a good way to compare what we had then to what we ended with now. So, here you go!

45. Renegades by X Ambassadors
44. Black Magic by Little Mix
43. Hey Mama by David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha and Afrojack
42. Locked Away by R. City featuring Adam Levine
41. American Dream by MKTO
40. Hide Away by Daya (red)
39. Riptide by Vance Joy
38. I Lived by OneRepublic
37. Shake It Off by Taylor Swift
36. Wrapped Up by Olly Murs featuring Travie McCoy
35. Fire N Gold by Bea Miller
34. Somebody To You by The Vamps featuring Demi Lovato
33. Lips are Movin' by Meghan Trainor

28. I'm Not The Only One by Sam Smith
27. Cool For The Summer by Demi Lovato
26. Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift
25. Something's Gotta Give by All Time Low
24. Take Me To Church by Hozier
23. Can't Feel My Face by The Weeknd
22. Jealous by Nick Jonas

6. Uma Thurman by Fall Out Boy
5. Style by Taylor Swift
4. Honey I'm Good by Andy Grammer
3. Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran
2. Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars (yeah yeah I know, how original)
1. Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon

...Wow. Only one song in the bottom tier, and only six others I would genuinely consider bad on their own. And almost half of these songs I have no problem at all returning to even now. Out of 45, that is very impressive. There are a few I may have slightly overrated back in July but they're still plenty fun for me.

Now let's see how well 2016's Year-End countdown can hold up to it! Enjoy.

Merry Blurbmas!

- There are a few songs such as On My Mind by Ellie GouldingClose by Nick Jonas and Tove Lo, Me Too by Meghan Trainor - and mercifully so, We Don't Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez, and Cold Water by Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber and MØ that I'm surprised didn't make this list.

- Of all the songs to repeat from 2015, I did not think that Stitches by Shawn Mendes would make it at the tail-end. Drag Me Down by One Direction was no surprise, though.

- I had a feeling that both Into You by Ariana Grande and Hymn For The Weekend by Coldplay would claw their way onto this lineup despite debuting in August. But I'm definitely glad they did. If it weren't for the latter's very impressive stay in the Top 20 and debuting there, it probably wouldn't have made it.

- To think that the #1 song on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 was only #39 here. Not to mention its predecessor, the #2 song on that chart, was at the exact midway point here. Just shows how they don't let certain hits blow up to them as many other stations do.

- Taylor Swift had two songs that Hits 1 was super nice to, but flopped elsewhere, in the #37 and #11 spots. Just goes to show that anything by her is massive to Hits 1.

- I'm glad that In The Night by The Weeknd made it. That one I just can't get sick of.

- Both 7 Years by Lukas Graham and Work From Home by Fifth Harmony made it midway through, following the common tradition of the big but not quite enormous hits (i.e. 11-20 range on Billboard's list) being relatively low here.

- Fall Out Boy's final bow of their long streak, Irresistible, made it in at the Top 20. No surprise there.

- One Call Away by Charlie Puth and Closer by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey both ranked way lower than I thought they would. The former I'm not complaining about, though.

- Pillowtalk by Zayn Malik and Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes both ranked way higher than I thought they would.

- I was absolutely shocked that Hello by Adele failed to make the Top 10. With how much it hogged the #1 spot you'd think it would've been there for sure. Then again it did burn through a chunk of its airplay in 2015. If it weren't for that, it would've easily been Top 5.

- Of course Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya made the Top 10. I'm gonna be honest, when I was listening to this countdown, I forgot that song even existed. Thanks for bringing back the bad memories.

- I did not think that Perfect by One Direction would be quite as high as it was. I thought it'd be in the 8 - 12 range or so. Nevertheless, I'm definitely happy that it reached this point, and after it was the bane of this countdown community back in the spring it seems like many have grown back into it, which is good.

- With Can't Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake being the monster that it was, I knew it'd be high. But I honestly expected Ride to pass it, no joke. Either way, I'm definitely content with how those two turned out...

- ...And then we come to our #1. I'm still mad that this song failed to last a year, but I'm definitely glad it was this successful. While it doesn't stand up to some of the past #1s that we've had, it earned its success and I came to appreciate it quite a bit. This band dominated the year and deserved that #1 spot. Also, fun fact: this is the fourth year in a row where Hits 1's #1 song is a rock song.

Overall, I'm content with this lineup. If I haven't said, my standards aren't usually too high, so it takes a lot for me to put a song in the bottom tier in the final say. Last year's lineup was definitely better for me, but I don't think this year was QUITE as bad as people say it was.

My Bottom 5 Of These Picks
1. No by Meghan Trainor
2. Work From Home by Fifth Harmony
3. Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya
4. This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris with Rihanna
5. One Call Away by Charlie Puth

My Top 5 Of These Picks
1. I Took a Pill In Ibiza by Mike Posner
2. Into You by Ariana Grande
3. Heathens by Twenty-one Pilots
4. Confident by Demi Lovato
5. Hello by Adele
(HM: In The Night by The Weeknd) - Only mentioning this because some may consider Hello more 2015 than 2016.

And there you have it! I promise I will try to have the A Year In Review page out as soon as I can. And I'm sure there'll be today's countdown as well. Thanks for reading!

December 17, 2016 - Hailee Steinfeld + Grey + Zedd (1)

So we begin a new year in countdown land...and to be blunt, this is not what I had hoped for. Yeah, this week was a mess. Not only did a song that was just about to make a year on the countdown get short, but our #1 hardly makes any sense whatsoever. I don't know what to say. I'm already out of words for this entire countdown post.

Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week: Fresh Eyes by Andy Grammer (-18)

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Say You Won't Let Go by James Arthur (+12)

New Entrants

- So we haven't heard that much from Steve Aoki, huh? There was A Light That Never Comes with Linkin Park from 2013, which was a huge favorite of Adrian's, and then Back 2 U with Walk The Moon earlier this year, which sadly failed to debut on the countdown. Now he's back with Louis Tomlinson of One Direction, in Just Hold On. There's plenty going on here, and if I'm not mistaken this was supposed to be in the aftermath of his mother's departure, as it was first performed on the X Factor soon after that point. While it's not as good as Back 2 U, I like this. However, the song does feel like it ends a bit too quickly. Still, it's fun for right now.

- Then the big one. I Don't Wanna Live Forever, a duet between Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift, the former of whom had Pillowtalk, which was big this year, and the latter of whom took two years off until this point to make a song for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, which is pretty unusual. While I'm not totally sure this is the kind of atmosphere that really fits Taylor, I guess it works for the theme of the movie it's for. Love Me Like You Do was certainly more enjoyable, but right now this is kinda cool. It probably won't stick with me, though. Also, interestingly, both our debuts this week feature former One Direction members.

I Just Wanna Keep Blurbing Your Name

- I don't even want to talk about our exits. Well, first there's This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris with Rihanna, which nobody cares about anymore (except Graham). But then there's Stressed Out by Twenty-one Pilots, which was two weeks from lasting a year on the countdown. I even heard it both on Monday and Thursday. I couldn't believe that it got the boot, like this legit just doesn't make any sense. What on earth, Hits 1. Why?!?!?! It doesn't help that the superior Tear In My Heart left one year ago. Interesting note: had that song lasted one more week or had this debuted one week earlier, the band would have had an uninterrupted tenure of over a year and a half. All that being said, I have a feeling that it will be the #1 song on the final Top 45.

- I have no idea how Girls Talk Boys by 5 Seconds Of Summer is still here. It lasted one week on the Billboard Hot 100 and Ghostbusters hype is long since over, if it was ever there to begin with. I mean, I do still enjoy the song, but I feel like it was rather underappreciated by this community just for having more of a funk sound than most other 5sauce songs. But what exactly's wrong with that?

- Fresh Eyes by Andy Grammer took a sudden drop into the bottom 10. I may have mentioned in a previous page a few weeks ago how some adult contemporary stuff I don't particularly care for, but there are some I like, and this is one of them.

- All four of our debuts from last week jumped in some capacity.

- And we had Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya finally drop out of the Top 20. Hopefully in time Hits 1 will finally let go of their love for Daya and it'll be gone for good.

- Then we've got Into You by Ariana Grande, which abruptly dropped to #22. But once again it's been there for a while so I can't be too surprised.

- It feels like The Greatest by Sia featuring Kendrick Lamar just re-enters and leaves the Top 20 whenever it wants to.

- Not only did Play That Song by Train hold at #14, but this is the second week in a row that it was introduced by a guest DJ. What are the odds.

- I reckoned it wasn't long before Water Under The Bridge by Adele would enter the Top 20.

- Here's a little bit of trivia regarding I Took A Pill In Ibiza and Treat You Better: their second week at #1 was four weeks after their first, and then on their second they dropped out of the top spot to #10. Shows that they hit #1 after their real prime.

- In The Name Of Love by Martin Garrix and Bebe Rexha only gets more enjoyable to me, and yes you are seeing that right. That claiming purple may not last long in the face of 24K Magic, but the song has neat production and a good vocal performance. I do want to give the underdog some credit here.

- The guest DJ who introduced Closer said that it was his favorite song on the countdown, and Spyder guessed "for the same reason as his girlfriend", what with the roommate back in Boulder. That guest DJ was from Denver, Colorado. I'll admit that was pretty funny...

- ...But that brings us to our new #1. As you can see, I'm not thrilled about this. To me this song was never that good at all. That drop has only gotten more annoying, and the lyrical content is dumb. Liking this song was hard enough for me, but this was the icing on the cake. At this point I'm left with no choice but to put it in orange. Sorry. :/ As strange as it is, I'm actually starting to find Closer more tolerable now. I mean, not to the point where I'd want to see it break records, but I can listen to it. Hence why it's still in blue.

Hit-Bound

You're Not There by Lukas Graham
Bad Things by Machine Gun Kelly and Camilla Cabello
Guys My Age by Hey Violet
Mercy by Shawn Mendes
Blow Your Mind (Mwah) by Dua Lipa
HandClap by Fitz And The Tantrums
Shout Out To My Ex by Little Mix
She Sets The City On Fire by Gavin DeGraw
Versace On The Floor by Bruno Mars (debut)
In My Mind by Maty Noyes
Words by Daya
Dancing On My Own by Calum Scott
Love On The Brain by Rihanna
Love Like We Used To by Captain Cuts (?)

- Little Mix hosted Hit-Bound this week.

- We've got but one debut, it being Versace On The Floor by Bruno Mars. Sounds like it's the second official single from 24K Magic, and while I definitely don't like it as much as the title track and would've preferred Chunky or Finesse to be singles, it's fun for sure.

- Words by Daya is really getting annoying after really analyzing it. And I don't just say that because I'm sick of Daya after her two solo hits and Don't Let Me Down... I'll talk more about it should it debut.

- I'm confused... Is Love Like We Used To by Captain Cuts still on Hit-Bound? Because I didn't hear it this round, there were only 13 songs that played.

Also, since I haven't done one of these in a while, I'll do a review of the YouTube15 with Jenna Marbles. I still think she can get very cheesy at times, but it's fun to find of songs I probably wouldn't have discovered otherwise. Here were the songs there this time around:

Side To Side by Ariana Grande featuring Nicki Minaj

Home by gnash featuring Johnny Yukon
Like I Did by Shane Harper
Starboy by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk
Savage by Whethan featuring Flux Pavilion and Max Schneider
Heathens by Twenty-one Pilots
Vengeance On My Mind by G-Eazy featuring Dana
Closer by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey
Nobody's Better by Z featuring Fetty Wap
Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes
Jumpshot by Dawin
24K Magic by Bruno Mars (okay, putting this in purple feels like cheating)
Make Me (Cry) by Noah Cyrus featuring Labrinth
Black Beatles by Rae Sremmurd featuring Gucci Mane
Setting Fires by The Chainsmokers featuring XYLO

- For starters we've got Home by gnash featuring Johnny Yukon. While I Hate U, I Love U wasn't a long-term sticker with me, this is one that had detail and depth to it. I like the sentiment of this one.

- I'm not huge on Like I Did by Shane Harper. There's some clunkiness here, including the repetition of the word "did" in the post-choruses, and multiple parts feel overproduced.

- I feel like people underrate G-Eazy. Do I think he's an epic ground-breakingly amazing rapper? No. But he has flow and he sounds like he cares about what he does. Vengeance On My Mind makes for a nice one I'd say.

- Nobody's Better by Z featuring Fetty Wap has good flow from Fetty Wap. While it doesn't top 679, which was easily my favorite thing he's been on, it's fun.

- More Dawin? Come on... Dessert I could kinda enjoy ironically, but that is not the same with Jumpshot.

- Similarly I don't care for Make Me (Cry) by Noah Cyrus featuring Labrinth. This one feels a little overwrought and melodramatic, but that's just me.

- And I guess this is as good a chance as any to talk about Black Beatles by Rae Sremmurd featuring Gucci Mane, which has been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a few weeks now. Now, I can't lie... I actually kinda like this. I mean, it's only blue, as the production is cool but the lyrics are another story. Unlike a lot of their songs this one has a decent amount of energy to it. But I'm hoping it doesn't become Billboard's #1 song of 2017.

- There's also Setting Fires by The Chainsmokers featuring XYLO. While the drop is snazzy, the rest of the song feels really overdone. I can't say it's something I'll go out of my way to listen to.

Most Missed Song: Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding

#1 Recommendation For Hits 1 And The Countdown: False Alarm by The Weeknd

Songs That Debuted This Week One Year Ago:

Get Ugly by Jason Derulo — WAMB10's bane, but I thought this one was pretty funny at least, what with Jason Derulo essentially doing a Ned Flanders imitation. Sorry. xP
S.O.B. by Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats — Wait, are we sure this song was released in 2015 and not in 1959? (And no that's not a color coding error)
I Know What You Did Last Summer by Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello — I'll talk more about this one come my Year-End Hot 100 piece, but this song has a good premise but it feels like it's trying to do too much.
When We Were Young by Adele — Once again, I'll have more words for this in detail soon, but you know, it's songs like this and New Americana that make me feel like Adrian should be watching Spectrum Pulse.

So with that, I'm hoping to have the 2016: A Year In Review page out tomorrow at the latest, but it depends on how productive I get (read: if I don't get consumed in trying to breed/chain Pokémon). My Top 45 (or again, however many) Songs Of The Year and the Year-End Hot 100 may not be until after Christmas, though (maybe on Christmas day I'll marathon the entire thing). But I'm gonna do what I can. Thanks for reading, everybody!
